Hugh Augustine McCartan

Hugh McCartan was born  in 1885 in the townland of Aughlisnafin, Annsboro County Down.

He attended Annsboro N.S.  His father bought a public house on the Springfield Road in Belfast, where he continued his education at  St Pauls NS, and Hughes C.S academy.

In 1922 he married Mary Egan.

He migrated to Dunlin, where he was employed as civil servant in Dept of Agriculture.

His published books are:  O'Neill's Folly, The Glamour of Belfast, Silhouettes (North and South), Little White Roads and Other Poems.  His writings were often published in the Irish Press and Irish News.

After the Treaty, he played an important role in negotiations during the time of the boundary commission

He Died 30 Sept 1943, in Dublin aged 56, His remains were removed to Belfast where he was buried in his family's plot in Milltown Cemetery.

His father John McCartan died 7 July 1899 aged 44 years. 

His mother Sarah (nee Rogers) died 24 August 1922 aged 75 years.
